CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Dark Hounds
Connor spent the best part of an hour exploring the impressive pile of photographs. He was so excited, he simply lost track of time. Dusty photographs emerged of Connor as a cute baby and a daring toddler. Many were highly embarrassing. Connor was grateful that Marion hadn’t felt the need to enlarge any of them and place them on show like so many other pictures.
The photographs had snapped moments in time. Connor was flabbergasted. They’d caught him running in the nude with food smudged round his mouth. Another one showed him peeing on the flowers in the garden. The best thing was of course discovering what his sister looked liked.
Her face was speckled with freckles and her long blonde hair swept down the length of her back. Her favourite clothes appeared to be jeans or blue dungarees. She seemed oddly familiar, as if he’d seen her before. Then he gave a laugh. Of course, he suddenly remembered, he’d seen her in his dreams.
Lying on the bed quietly, he could hear Sparkie moving about downstairs. The unmistakable sound of the kettle boiling on the stove for the umpteenth time made a roar like a low-flying aeroplane. Connor came to the conclusion that Sparkie was nervous. K had previously told him Sparkie always drank tea when he was worried about something. Connor prayed he was worrying unnecessarily.
Hoping that Marion wouldn’t mind, since he wanted some photographs of his family, he kept four of them and placed them safely in his pocket. The first one he’d chosen was of his parents’ wedding. They were pictured together outside a quaint flint church, smiling happily for the world to see. Judging by the amount of flowers in bloom, Connor presumed they must have married in the summertime.
The second picture was of his big sister cradling him, smiling proudly like a Cheshire cat with him in her arms. The third photograph he’d wanted was a typical family portrait of his mum and dad, sister and himself, standing together like a real family.
Near the bottom of the cardboard box, he later discovered a small creamy coloured photo album, full of snapshots of him with various animals. He could be seen riding a horse, stroking a Great Dane, patting a crocodile, cuddling a python, being picked up by an elephant’s trunk and cleaning the teeth of a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
At first Connor assumed the photographs had been taken in a place filled with various models of different animals but he later discovered the photographs were genuine. On the back of every picture was a description of who was in the picture and whereabouts it was taken.
Much to Connor’s surprise, he discovered K was the animal in each photograph, having shape-shifted into the form of different animals to interact with him.
‘Every summer, you all used to go up north to a secluded holiday camp managed by the AAA. Harlingfield had been purpose built for human families and stranded aliens, who were all connected in some way to the establishment.
